Moorfields Eye Hospital restores vision to 2 patients with severe macular degeneration in experimental treatment

Researchers at the Moorfields Eye Hospital have had success with a new stem cell based treatment that replaces cells in the retinal pigment epithilum, using an implant inserted into the eye, which eventually integrates into the eye and replaces cells that have been damaged or depleted due to age.

This is the first test of this treatment, and only 2 patients were operated on, but both saw dramatic improvements in their vision. The hospital plans to enroll another 8 patients in the near future.
